The new Holmenkollen ski jump inaugurated

The new Holmenkollen ski jump was inaugurated on Wednesday, March 3, and Norway's favourite female ski jumper Anette Sagen was given the honour of being the very first one to jump.

Everyone was invited to Holmenkollen on Wednesday to view and celebrate the opening. The event started with the first official jump by Anette Sagen (born 10 January 1985) who is one of the best international female jumpers of all time. She received a lot of media attention in 2004, when she was denied the opportunity to jump K185 in Vikersund, in spite of her good results. The struggle was over whether the quality of female ski jumpers was high enough to allow women to jump in these venues. The debate has developed into a discussion about women's rights in the world of sports.

The new ski jump has been built for the 2011 World Ski Championships, which will be held in Holmenkollen 24 February-6 March next year. The weekend of 13-14 March 2010 Holmenkollen will host a FIS Nordic World Cup event.
